Latest Update:
As of 13th May 2008 there are 138 pupils currently being taught by 9 teaching staff with the school being looked after by 2 caretakers. When the school is completed there will be 300 students of mixed age groups.
The building work has been completed and plastering is now taking place but there is no water supply or electricity as yet.
Donations are still needed to be able to buy chairs, desks, stationary, fans etc to be able to make it a comfortable place to learn and work.
Following a telephone conversation on 31st October between Mr. Ahmed, Year Leader (Y11) and the principle of the school in Barakot we learn that:-
- Our school in Barakot, Pakistan is 7 feet tall!
- Only two more layers and then the ceiling and roof - hopefully completed in December.
- There will be 11 rooms for primary and secondary pupils.
- The school should be ready in February, pupils can then leave their tents for a building with solid walls and a roof.
The attached pictures have been sent to us by Mrs Shamim Mahmood of the Janat-ul-Firdous charitable organisation who is working with Small Heath School Friends (FOSHS) to support the education of children in Barakot following the earthquake of October 2005.
So far FOSHS working with the community have raised £15,000.00. We now need only another £5,000.00 to complete the total build.
The next fundraising event will take place on Friday 25th January 2008 at Small Heath School, Muntz Street. The theme of the third annual ladies gala evening will be Brazil. This girls/moms only evening will include pupils dance display in the drama studio and stalls selling a variety of things - please see posters around school and on our website: www.smallheathschool.org.uk.
We are asking for pupils/parents to contribute to our stalls please see attached notice.
FOSHS desperately need your help to complete our project in Barakot, please come along to the evening on 25th January from 5pm to 7pm. If you are able to assist in any way please contact Mrs Ridout, Mrs Kuczynski, Mrs Ahmed, Mrs Lovenbury or Mrs Bagnall.
