Careers Education and Guidance plays an important part in the lives of pupils at Small Heath School. The aim of the programme is to provide pupils with the skills and knowledge to make wise and informed choices regarding their future.
Careers education, supported by personalised information, advice and guidance (known as CEIAG) begins in Key Stage 3 as pupils grow to understand the purpose of work in society during their Personal Development curriculum (PDC) lessons. During Years 9, 11 and sixth form help and advice is given to pupils so that each pupil is able to make an informed choice about continuing education, jobs and training. Pupils are given the opportunity to attend a Careers Fair. Their options are reinforced by Curriculum Enhancement & Enterprise Days (CEE Day) and extensive work related learning activities which take place at our school.
The school works closely with Connexions Birmingham. Personal Advisers are regular visitors to our school and pupils can self refer for an interview by completing the green forms available in the library. In addition to individual interviews and group sessions Connexions offer a drop-in service during most break and lunch times. Careers guidance is available at parents’ evenings and Connexions support various CEE days, Year 9 options choices and the Year 10 work experience programme.
Pupils have access to up to date information about their future options in the careers section of Upper School library where leaflets, books, magazines and local university prospectuses may be located; and careers packages, such as KUDOS, are available to them on the school computer network.
