SMALL HEATH SCHOOL & WEST MIDLANDS POLICE PARTNERSHIP

West Midlands Police are commited to developing working partnerships in the community in line with Neighbourhood
policing strategies in order to reduce, prevent and detect crime.

The introduction of police officers into secondary schools is a positive move towards developing and improving relationships and between
the police and local communities. By working in close partnership with education and local service providers we are able to
inform young people and their families of their rights within thr law, establish what crimes affect them and, through intervention work,
support individuals who are vulnerable to becoming victims or commiting crime.

I am PC INGLIS, the School Based Police Officer stationed at Small Heath School. The school invited me to join the team in March 2007 since that time I have been permanently working at the school. Partnership working between schools and the Police is a vital tool in Neighbourhood policing and also assists in meeting the Every Child Matters Outcomes.

My role at the school is varied however, here are just a few points that I feel are important to you and your child.

  1. SAFETY. By interacting with pupils via assemblies and teaching in lessons I am able to give then advice and guidance on personal safety. This reduces the likelihood of them becoming the offenders or victims of crime. Truancy patrols with school home liaison helps to monitor pupils who may put themselves in danger by “skipping” school.
  2. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: working in the school gives me an excellent opportunity to engage with pupils and parents who live in the local area. This enables me to look at ways of breaking down barriers between the police and young people as well as getting the chance to hear their views. I attend and organise various trips with pupils.
  3. CITIZENSHIP. Working in partnership with the schools behaviour and mentor teams means I can identify pupils who may be at risk of involvement in crime either as offenders or victims. I can then assist in providing pupils and families with support to turn things around.
  4. HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES. During school holidays I work closely with Small Heath Leisure centre and Cole Heath Extended school cluster coordinators to provide safe and fun activities for ALL pupils at the school. These activities have included: football, mountain biking, outward bound activities, self defence course and access to courses such as first aid. Myself or fellow members of police staff attend all the sessions which enables pupils to get active and have fun in a safe environment.
  5. ADVICE AND SUPPORT. My role extends to giving advice and support to parents and relatives of pupils who may have specific issues. If I am unable to assist personally I’LL KNOW A CONTACT WHO CAN.

So if you have any concerns or questions regarding support for your child or indeed for the local community as a whole PLEASE
feel free to pop into the school and see me. I have also provided a series of links to web sites that I thought you may find useful.
