Small Heath School and Sixth Form Centre

Year 10 Work Experience 2010

PLACEMENT DATES:

MONDAY 12 - FRIDAY 16th of July 2010
You have two ways of finding your work experience.
You can either:

  • Search for your own placement
  • Use the school’s database of placements

If you want to search for your own place you have until Monday 23rd February 2009:

  • Decide what you want to do.  You could speak to the Connexions staff in school or research your options in the careers library or on the internet.  The ‘Occupational areas’ link below may also help you out.
  • Search the internet, the phone book or the Yellow Pages to find companies that offer the type of work that you are interested in, and then contact them.  You or your family might also have a contact that can offer you a placement.
  • When an employer has agreed to offer you a work experience placement you must complete the ‘Own Placement Form’ – you will be given a copy in school but you can also download the form from the link below.
  • ‘Own Placement’ Forms must be completed and handed in to Mrs Auger in Room G04 by MONDAY 11 JANUARY.

If you don’t find your own placement by Monday 11 January you will choose your work experience from the school’s database of placements:

  • You will make three choices from the database in ‘Session 7’ time next January.
  • There will be over 250 placements on the database BUT some places are very popular – you might not get your first or even your second choice.
  • The most popular placements usually include pharmacies, garages, local primary schools, shops in the Bullring Centre and local businesses.
  • Some popular companies ask students to write to them as early as possible to apply for work experience places. These popular companies include Land Rover, Jaguar, John Lewis, the National Sea Life Centre, Cadburys and the Ackers Trust.  If you are interested in any of these companies please see Mrs Auger in school or contact Mrs Gough on 0121 713 0066, as soon as possible.

Things to remember:

  • All places have to be checked for Health & Safety so no placement that you find yourself is guaranteed.  All database placements have been checked.
  • For Health & Safety reasons you won’t be allowed to work with direct family members or people who work on their own.
  • You might have to travel to anywhere in the city – some placements may even be two buses away!!
  • If you don’t want to miss out on your first choice you need to find your own place by Monday 11 January so that you don’t have to rely on the school database.
  • Don’t get stressed about work experience - talk to Mr Marshall, Mrs Gough, Mrs Auger or your form tutor.  We’re all happy to help.
